Section1: Introduction
This student handbook serves as a reference
guide for basic life support (BLS) For the purpose of this
program, the term BLS means recognition of signs of sudden
cardiac arrest (SCA), heart attack, stroke, and foreign-body
airway obstruction (FBAO), cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR),
and defibrillation with an automated external defibrillator
(AED) 3 This program is Intended for healthcare providers,
first responders, and professional rescuers in and outside
the hospital or for those needing professional level basic
life support training as a job requirement. American Safety
and Health Institute (ASHI) certification may only be Issued
when an ASHI-authorized Instructor verifies you have successfully
completed and competently performed the required core knowledge
and skill objectives of the program. By itself, this student
handbook does not constitute complete training
Universal Basic Life Support Procedures
Assess Not moving ? Unrespponsive?
Rescuer Not alone
Attend, send another rescuer to alert
Rescuer alone
Victim collapsed suddenly (all ages) alert, then attend.
Victim suffocated (drowning, smoke
inhalation, etc) attend
(give about 5 cycles of CPR) then alert
Alert Call 911
Or activate emergency action plan
EMS providers: consider/request additional
resources
Other rescuers: communicate with 911 dispatcher. Hang up when
instructed. Get AED
Attend A=Airway Tilt head-lift chin.
Injury jaw thrust
B=breathing: Look listen and feel for 5 but no more than 10
s econds
If no breathing give 2 breaths that make chest visibly rise
C=circulation
Check pulse for 5 but no more than 10 seconds
No pulse Rescuer alone with Adult/child/infant:
30 compressions 2 breaths Repeat
Two or more rescuers with Child/Infant:
15 Compressions, 2 breaths, repeat
Push chest hard and fast ( 100X per
min. ) allow chest to recoil completely. Minimize interruptions.
Definite pulse
Adult 1 breath every 5 seconds
Infant child: one breath every 3 seconds
Recheck pulse every 2 min.
Defibrillation: Adult/child over 1 year old
Expose chest turn on AED, attach
Analyze rhythm
No shock advised
Immediately resume CPR
5 cycles of CPR, check rhythm
Shock advised
Clear, Give 1 shock
Immediately resume CPR
5 cycles of CPR, Check rhythm
Continue until person with equal or more training takes over,
EMS/advanced providers arrive, victim shows signs of life,
you are exhausted, or scene becomes too dangerous to continue.
